In July 2001, disabled children experienced windsurfing for the first time at Camp Shawnigan, a summer residential camp for disabled people. Camp Shawnigan hired Wind Adventures to facilitate the windsurfing experience.

Wind Adventures successfully ensured that more than 120 children windsurfed on the calm waters of Lake Shawnigan. Many children described the experience as "the best time of their life." Disabilities ranged from cerebral palsy, blindness, deafness, paraplegia, multiple sclerosis, learning impairments and downs syndrome. Rather than focus on the limitations of the disabilities, Kevin Vowles, director of Wind Adventures, chose to capitalize on the strong abilities of the children, to ensure that each person had a positive first experience on the water.
