Starboard Go Friendship
Windsport, Canada/spring 01

Weight : 10.5 kg
Length : 280 cm
Volume : 180 liters
Width : 83.5 cm

Originally released in 1999, the Go set the windsurf world on it's head with a massively wide, Formula style design. When we first tested the Go, it was Windsports board of the year because of its early planing ability for experts and stability for lightweight beginners. The Go returns with a fresh design and further influence from Starboard's race winning Formulas.

The Go Friendship features a diamond tail, beveled rails and increased rocker. One of our favorite bell-and-whistles, the full EVA pad returns unchanged. The board is available with a massive 54 cm blade-style race fin, or a new 33 cm ultra wide, low aspect fin. In light wind the Go is stable enough for lightweights to learn. When equipped with the optional Starbilizers mini side fins, the board responds quickly to sail steering and cruises upwind when needed. Light wind tacking is much improved with the installation of the side fins. As wind picks up, the side fins need to be removed for the model to perform at its best when planing. The early planing ability of the Go, when combined with big sails, is exceptional, particularly for experts. The increased rocker allows the Go trim up higher in the nose, resulting in a less sticky feel when braving chop. When in the footstraps the board is more technically demanding than others, requiring more rider attention to the trim of the board through toe pressure to smooth out the gusts. The new Go has a wider variety of footstrap insert options, allowing the straps to be set further inboard, making their use less intimidating for novices.

The Go really comes into its own as an early planing performance short board for mom and dad that doubles as a tool for teaching the kids. The rig package is well worth the extra dough if you are serious about introducing your kids to windsurfing the right way. Most first time buyers will find the other boards in the category more footstrap friendly.
